Exeter has the second largest population in Devon, just behind Plymouth, with approximately 131,500 residents. Though the city was once famous for its wool trade, since the end of the second world war, it has grown to become a hub of business, tourism and education that runs through Devon and down to Cornwall. The city is steeped in history, from the Guildhall, the oldest civic building in the country and the famous Royal Clarence Hotel, built in 1769 and is the oldest hotel in Britain. Parts of the building date back as far as the 1500s. The city has a balance of old England and modern flair.
There are several sights to behold in Exeter; Exeter Cathedral, founded in the middle of the 11th century, sits in the centre of the city, exuding gothic style and stunning architecture. In addition, St. Nicholas' priory on Mint Lane houses the remains of an ancient monastery. Other places of interest include The Guildhall, the quayside area, and Parliament Street, which is famous for being one of the narrowest streets in the world, the war memorial and the 14th century Tudor building that features in all Exeter tourism literature and has become synonymous with the area. The city thrives with high street brand shops, internationally influenced restaurants, bars and pubs at every turn. The bus links are extensive and with two main railway stations, getting in and out of the city to other parts of the UK is straightforward. There is much to do in the town and with London and Cornwall both accessible, Exeter is a great place to visit or live.
