Newton Abbot is a historic market town based on the River Teign, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Devon. With a population of approximately 25,556, the town expanded rapidly during the Victorian era and is widely recognised as the home of the South Devon Railway locomotive works. Its railway network providing direct connections to neighbouring towns and villages, as well as into London Paddington.

Historically, the town prospered from both wool and clay industries, although the true transformation of Newton Abbot happened in 1846, as the town became a communications centre.
