Newton Abbot is a historic market town based on the River Teign, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Devon. With a population of approximately 25,556, the town expanded rapidly during the Victorian era and is widely recognised as the home of the South Devon Railway locomotive works. Its railway network providing direct connections to neighbouring towns and villages, as well as into London Paddington.
Historically, the town prospered from both wool and clay industries, although the true transformation of Newton Abbot happened in 1846, as the town became a communications centre. Railway services were established into the town making the area a prime location for other developments. Today, in addition to glorious scenery, Newton Abbot offers many shopping and leisure options, as well as multiple indoor and outdoor markets.
The Decoy Country Park sits on the edge of south Devon. Once a clay quarry, it is now home to beautiful countryside and a wealth of wildlife. Here, you can enjoy walks, feed the ducks or enjoy a picnic in one of the designated areas. For something a little more fun, the park also offers a range of onsite water sports, such as canoeing and windsurfing.
For a day out filled with variety as well as an engaging calendar of events, head over to Trago Mills Family Shopping and Leisure Park, which houses over 18,500 square metres of activities, such as ice skating and go karting, as well as being the largest garden centre in the south west. The Family Fun Park, offers fun packed rides for all ages, whereas at Theden Animal Park, you can meet a number of animals including ponies, piglets, goats and rabbits.
