Thornbury
The town of Thornbury has consistently been voted one of the best places to live in the country and has been described as "a little Nirvana" by the Sunday Times. It is easy to see why. With a population of around 13,000, this quaint market town in South Gloucestershire is a hidden gem to many. It is situated just 12 miles north of Bristol and benefits from the charm of a quintessentially English town while still having excellent access to the city.
The town is steeped in rich history, so there is much to see and do in the area. Built in 1511, Thornbury Castle was a gift for Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham. Though now a hotel, the building is a must-see if you are visiting the area, notably for housing the oldest Tudor gardens in England and a still functioning vineyard over 500 years old. Other remarkable points of interest include the town water pump that sits on a tiny island at the bottom of High Street. The town truly comes together every year in May when Thornbury locals host a ten-day festival that involves music, theatre, workshops from designers, local artists and celebrations of writers and musicians. Locals and those visiting the area will also find the heritage trail walk a draw of the town. The route takes you in and around the town seeing historical buildings and important places of interest, starting from the town hall. From a flurry of shops, restaurants and sightseeing, Thornbury really is a little slice of beauty.
