Wokingham
Located in Berkshire, Wokingham has a thriving population of around 48,000 people. Sitting just 37 miles west of London and 7 miles from Reading, the town is situated conveniently with ease of access. It has been part of the county since 1974 and was originally part of Oxfordshire. The population is around 80,000, making it the second largest town in the county.
Wokingham has an excellent public transport network with regular train services to London Paddington station and Reading station. There are also bus routes across the whole of Berkshire, including Reading Buses and First Group buses which pass through Wokingham regularly. So, whether you are looking for an intimate setting, a night out with friends or casual dining, there is no shortage of pubs, restaurants and cafes in the area. Wokingham once boasted of having the most pubs per head population, so there are plenty of options at your disposal. It has been a market town since at least 1209 when it was recorded as having a weekly market. The town's main attraction is its large market square, which hosts one of the largest annual street festivals in the country.
Whatever your interests, there is loads to do in this bustling market town; the popular Mill at Sonning is a noteworthy gem; it is the only dinner/theatre combination in the UK. The interestingly unique choice of shows, tasty buffet-style restaurant and relaxed setting make for a great selection of evening entertainment in one place. However, if something more active is your bag, Wokingham is a great central point for some of the county's most stunning scenes. California Country Park and Dinton Pastures offer fantastic walks, wildlife watching and fun activities for children and families; camping options are also available.
Shopping, museums and restaurants are a dime a dozen here, so whatever your want, there is something local for you to do. In addition, Wokingham is home to several housing options, including Victorian terraces and estates built during the post-war period.
There are also many independent shops, including clothing boutiques and antique stores, which sell locally handcrafted items such as jewellery made from wood or metal by local artisans from around the Wokingham area. Add to this Wokingham's neighbouring towns at its disposal, and there is always a reason to visit with Reading, Camberley, London, and Bracknell on offer. Finally, if you are still not convinced, Wokingham has also been voted one of the healthiest places in the country to live.
